Planning a Hill Station Trip - Ooty & Munnar this Time & Yes On BIKES!! ;)

49 comments

Often, When i'm Bored/stressed/Free i like to dig up blogs to read about travelogues on places & journeys that interest me. One- I find that interesting. Two- helps me plan my trip to similar destinations. This way i've planned so many trips with my friends till date & most of these plans ve even got successfully executed. :) On the other hand, ve also been part of some trips that happened on the go, no prior plans.. just some instant decisions.

Planned & Unplanned Trips have their own advantages/disadvantages. Neverthless planning gives you some clarity and assures you have all the necessary information & to be used when needed, n then going by your instinct always assures you end up having a gr8 time :p

Now that touring/Biking has become a Passionate hobby, its time to head out to some nice destination for a Long Ride. By long ride, i mean quite long somethin  > 350 kms one way. Our numerous Short n Long Rides ve now given us the Confidence to Ride Safe & Ride Long. Thanks to some fellow riders, and a group called Bangalore Bikers, Our Passion got some much needed Inspiration & we decided to invest on some Basic Safety/Riding Gear (Helmet, Shoes, Gloves, Riding Jacket, Knee Gaurds, Saddle bags etc). P.S: If you are serious about Touring on Bikes, make sure you get all these sooner than later.

March 31st being a Holiday, and a Monday, we thought, if we take leave on Friday (March 28), we'll get FOUR Consecutive days. "WoW!! SupeR. Perfect for a Trip!"

March 28 (Fri), 29 (Sat), 30 (Sun), 31 (Mon). 'Four days are more than enuh man.. :p'

So..
Our initial plan was to ride to "GOA", through Hubli (where a friend of ours would join us or rather be forced to join :)

But, owing to weather & leave constraints, we had to postpone this plan.(read ruled out). When it comes to planning for a Trip, for me, its either 'Now' or 'I dont care when. Will see later.' After all, Things happen only when they are meant to happen, rite.. ;)

So as an Excuse, we thought if at all we go to Goa it should be with our Group of Friends or else "What's the use of going so far?? that too on Bikes.. alwa..?!"

But, we want a trip. we want to Ride. Staying in blore on the last weekend of March is not an option at all ;p

Few other places on the list were: MM Hills, Kolli Hills, BR Hills, Pondicherry (East Coast), Karwar (West Coast), Dharmasthala, Kukke Subramanya, Kodachadri (western ghats), Waynad, Valparai-Munnar, Ladakh, Kashmir-Kanyakumari :p etc.

Touring in India has lots to offer: Scenic Hill Stations, Beaches, Lakes, Waterfalls, ButterSmooth Roads, Awesome Weather, Tasty Food, Adventure Sports etc.

(having covered places like Dandeli, Mangalore-Udupi, Dharamasthala, Kateel, Badami-Aihole-Pattadkal, Sirsi-Yana- Gokarna-Murudeshwara, Kukke, Coorg, Yercaud, Ooty, Chick'magalur, Waynad, Mysore & some local places like Nandi Hills, Madhugiri, Ramadevara Betta, RevanaSiddeshwara, Devarayanadurga, SiddaraBetta, Siddagange, Shivagange, Savandurga, Skandagiri etc..)

we thought, how about a Hill Station Ride to Ooty-Waynad-Munnar?

would be a good option for 3 Reasons:
1. It would be our 1st Time to Munnar & its far. around 500 kms one way. ideal for us :p
2. Being a Hill Station, it'll be cooler compared to some coastal areas (GOA/Pondi)
3. Biking in hill Stations is always fun. (we had thoroughly enjoyed Coorg & Yercaud on previous bike trips)

But then.... "its quite far rite, Ooty-Waynad-Munnar is not like Blore-Goa where you'll get to drive fast on smooth tarmac (NH) most of the time & our longest so far is only: 250kms a day. might get difficult for us & our bikes :("
"in that Case, lets skip Munnar & do Ooty-Waynad instead. Been ther Before. Nice hill Stations, ood roads. Easily doable in 4 days.."

"Ok. So Ooty & Waynad for now. Next Goa, then Kolli hills, MM Hills, BR Hills, next Pondicherry, then Kashmir, Kanyakumari :p"

But then, while browsing BangaloreBikers.com, we read some travelogues of Bike trips to "Valparai-Munnar" from Bangalore. Those threads bowled us Over. Great trips by a gr8 Group of Bikers. Read some more, just felt - 'This place is MAST'. The pics we saw were Awesome, Mindblowing, Mesmerising etc etc.

"You know what??  Munnar!! Munnar!! Munnar!! Munnar!!
Its Jus Super :)"

"Ok then, lets skip Wayanad & do Ooty-Munnar?!"
Blore-Ooty: 260kms, Ooty-Munnar: 260kms, Munnar-Blore: 465Kms Perfect!!
"Fine. lets do it then."

So what do we do?-
Lets buy some Riding Gear.
Lets plan..
Lets Ride!!

Got a Spartan Helios Jacket just before the BB March Welcome Ride to Kendatii Lake, Kolar

after much hesitation, put up a post on BangaloreBikers.com
http://bangalorebikers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2757

Got some valuable inputs as expected :) n the plan became more clear. Its going to be just Ooty-Munnar in 4 days. No Valparai / Kodaikanal. Lets ve a relaxed trip & enjoy the Ride.

Confirmed Riders, as usual:
1. Vinay @vins (zmr)
2. Nithesh @nitheshnairy (200ns)

ROUTES

Blore-Ooty
1.  Bangalore --> Ramnagara --> Mandya --> SriRangapattna --> Mysore --> Nanjangud --> Gundlupet --> Bandipur--> Masinagudi -- Ooty ( Approx 265 Kms)
10 kms after crossing Srirangapatna town (and around 5 kms before Mysore town), you will see a cross roads, where you will find both left and right going to Ooty (straight goes to Mysore). If you take the right turn, the bypass will last 26 kms, and lead you to teh Mysore-Ooty road, 6 kms after Mysore city and 16 kms after Nanjangud town. Signages are good at both ends. The bypass is a good road.
as of now, for me, Ooty ~ 36 hair pin Bends :p
So eagerly waiting for that stretch. Quite excited cos its my 1st time to Ooty by Bike.
Gotta Drive Safe.

Ooty-Munnar:

2. Ooty -> Kotagiri -> Mettupalayam -> Avinashi -> Palladam -> Udumalaipettai -> Chinnar -> Marayoor -> Munnar.

Aliter: Ooty - Kotagiri- Mettupalayam - Coimbatore - Pollachi - Udumalpet - Chinnar - Munnar.

Ooty- Coonoor - Mettupalayam better avoided (on acc. of traffic n road conditions)
same applies for the route thru Coimbatore

Munnar - Blore:

3. Divided into 3 parts: a, b, c

a) Munnar -> Marayoor -> Udumalaipettai

b) 4 Options to reach Thoppur from Udumalaipettai

Unchalli Falls: (Lushington falls), (Keppa Joga)
It is actually the river Aghanashini, tributary of Kali river which makes this spectacular falls. After travelling for around 15km from Sirsi crossing Ammenahalli village on the way, one has to take a left and have to travel another 20km to reach Unchalli falls. The falls are 5 km from Heggarane Village.

The tar road takes almost till the falls. The last half kilometer has to be done by walk to reach the view point.

There are few hundred steps to go near to the falls and two view points to view but be aware that these concrete steps won’t lead you till the bottom of the falls. It rather stops abruptly. If one wants to go till the bottom of the falls there is a different path that leads you there. Near the start point of the steps leading to view points, there are few concrete benches that have been put up for people to relax. Just behind these one can see a small path mud way that would lead till the bottom. It would be a one hour of walk to reach the bottom of the falls.

Two Ways to Yana from Sirsi:-
The first one is through Devimane ghat on the way to kumta where one has to take deviation and the other one is through villages of Hegdekatte, Devanalli and Mattighatta (while driving from Sirsi towards kumta one has to take a deviation to the right to go to Hegdekatte road)

Time: 1 and half hours

Route from Unchalli Falls (40 KM from Unchalli Falls): Unchalli Falls – Heggarane – Aminhalli – Left at Kumta Road– Proceed for 0.5 KM on Kumta Road – Right at Kumta Road towards Hegadekatte –> Hegadekatte – Devanalli – Yana

90 meters and 120 meters respectively called "Mohini Shikhara" and "Bhairaveshwara Shikhara"

61 structures of these kinds
Shivalinga inside the cave on which water trickles down, which people call it gangodbhava.
There's a path through which one can come around the Bhairava shikara

Vibhoothi Falls:
7-8km from Yana.  to reach this one has to go back to the intersection which led into Yana, take the other direction which leads to Vaddi Ghats.

The place name is Mabage. From here the falls is around 3kms. The last 1km has to be by walk and it takes around 20min to reach this falls.

This is a three step fall. People call it Vibhoothi since it flows through limestone and the water here is bright white. At the end of the falls once can go for a swim or take a bath as it forms a small pool before going down further for one more fall.

Other falls:
(near Sirsi)- Mattighatta falls, Benne Hole, Wate Halla falls
(near Sonda)- Shivagange
(near Yellapur)- Sathodi Falls, Shirley Falls, Maagod Falls
(near Siddapur)- Burude and Wate Halla falls

1. Satyanatheshwara Temple, Bakkala. Bakkala is a village at around 18km from Sirsi on Sirsi-Sonda route via Hulekal.

2. Sahasralinga, Sonda: Sahasralinga, is approachable from Hulgol, on Sirsi-Yellapur road at around 15km from Sirsi

3. Muttinakere Venkataramana Temple, Sonda

4. Hunasehonda Venkataramana Temple, Sonda

5. Sonda Kote, Sonda

6. Madhukeshwara Temple, Banavasi

Mission Madikeri

5 comments

Collecting information about a place where we wish to go, posting it on a blog and then using the same info during our trip. This is somehow turning out to be a good, useful habit.. :)

After Yercaud, its now time for 'Coorg' which is also at a distance of 250kms from Bangalore. This would be my 4th time visiting this beautiful Hill Station which is also known as "The Scotland of India".

Tourist Attractions:

The usual places:-

1) Golden Temple (Byle kuppe, Tibetian Colony)
2) Dubbare Forest (Rafting/Elephant Camp)
3) Nisargadhama (Boating, Zipline etc)
4) Abbi Falls
5) Raja Seat
6) Omkareshwara Temple
7) Bhagamandala (TalaCauvery)
8) Gaddige (Raja's Tomb)

Places that are less popular:-

9) Chelavara Falls
10) Chomakund Hills (near Chelavara Falls)
11) Mallalli Falls
12) Iruppu Falls (Lakshman Theertha)
13) Tadiyendamol, Kakkabe (2nd Highest Peak in Karnataka)
14) Nalnad Palace (located on the foot of Tadiyendamol Hills)
15) Mandalpatti (MugiluPete in Gaalipata :)
16) Devarakolli Falls
17) Iguthappa Temple

The list goes on.. :)

=============================================================

Here's a plan that one can follow:-

1) Bylakuppe(Tibetian Monastery), Nisargadhama and Dubbare Elephant camp in one shot preferably on 1st day itself.

Try Zipline at Nisargadhama and Rafting at Dubbare. Check this for the timings: https://coorgtourism.co.in/dubare-elephant-camp-coorg

2) Omkareshwara Temple, Abbi falls, Mandalpatti, Raja's Tomb and Raja Seat all are near Madikeri.

Mandalpatti has some offroading. Better park the bike midway and walk the last stretch.

Abbi falls you've to climb down and climb up some 100-150 steps. You can take pics from a distance. Can't get down to the waters. During monsoons, the view is worth it. If its your first time, then Abbi falls is definitely worth a visit.

Raja Seat
(Sunset point) and the Omkareshawara temple can be covered at evening time as well. Raja Seat will be open till 8pm. You can take a walk at Raja Seat if you reach there before its dark and Relax watching the Sunset. There's a toy train and musical fountain as well. You can just have some snacks and relax.

3) Talacauvery and Bhagamandala- go early in the morning. Will be a good Ride. Dont keep this for evening/afternoon. Try coffee/tea at some shops on the way.

4) Tadiandimol(Trekking)- Chelavara falls (close to Virajpet). Again, dont keep this for evening.

=============================================================

Other than the above you can visit:-
  1. Mallalli fallsBeautiful falls but it was difficult to reach few years back. Not sure about the condition now.
  2. Nagarhole Reserve forest, Iruppu Falls(Lakshman Theertha). Lakshman theertha involves a short trek of few minutes. In Nagarhole you can take a Safari.
Try to explore some offbeat places as well in Coorg.

=============================================================

Also, on the way to Coorg from Bangalore there are plenty of places to visit around Mysore, Srirangapatna etc.

Some of the ones I like are:-
1.    Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
2.    Ranganatha temple, SangamaTippu Summer Palace in Srirangapatna
3.    Chamundi Hill, Mysore Zoo, Mysore Palace in Mysore
4.    TalakaduSomnathpur/ChannaKeshava Temple, ShivanaSamudra Falls(Barachukki, Gaganachukki)

===========================================================

Some maps:- Tourist map, Route map, Road map, whatever you may want to call it..
